What Happened to the Age of Aquarius?

on May 16, 2022

If there’s one song that best captures the hopes and dreams of the 1960s, it’s the medley, “Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In,” from the Broadway musical, Hair (1967). The 5th Dimension, who compiled the medley, really rocked it. I still want to get up and dance to the music. But, whatever happened to the Age of Aquarius?

Lyrics:

When the moon is in the seventh house
And Jupiter aligns with Mars
Then peace will guide the planets
And love will steer the stars

This is the dawning of the age of Aquarius
Age of Aquarius
Aquarius!
Aquarius!

Harmony and understanding
Sympathy and trust abounding
No more falsehoods or derisions
Golden living dreams of visions
Mystic crystal revelation
And the mind’s true liberation
Aquarius!
Aquarius!

When the moon is in the seventh house
And Jupiter aligns with mars
Then peace will guide the planets
And love will steer the stars

This is the dawning of the age of Aquarius
Age of Aquarius
Aquarius!
Aquarius!
Aquarius!
Aquarius!

Alright, everybody
C’mon now, we gon’ use other words for this song
Let the sun shine
Let the sunshine in
C’mon, sing along with it

Let the sun shine
Let the sunshine in
The sunshine in (you’ve got to feel it)
Let the sun shine (you’ve got to feel it)
Let the sunshine in (ahh, open up your heart)
The sunshine in (and let it shine on in)
Let the sun shine
Let the sunshine in
The sunshine in
Let the sun shine
Let the sunshine in
The sunshine in

Astrologically, nobody really knows when the Age of Aquarius is supposed to begin or if it already did. If you go by these lyrics, it began with the Hippie/New Age Movement of the 1960s and 1970s. But some people believe it began in the 1800s with the Industrial Revolution. Others believe it happened with 12/12/12 and the Mayan prophecy of spiritual realignment. Still others believe it arrived with the COVID-19 pandemic and officially established itself in February 2021. I saw one theory where Jesus and the Apostles were the beginning of the Age of Aquarius. Another one promoted Valentine’s Day 2009 as the beginning. So, who knows? One thing is certain – the lyrics do not accurately reflect its beginning, according to astrologer Neil Spencer, because “Jupiter aligns with Mars several times a year, and the Moon is in the 7th House for 2 hours everyday.”

According to New Age adherents, the Age of Aquarius can be identified by certain hallmarks:

  1. A rapidly-changing society, dependent on technological innovation and intuitive creativity;
  2. Universal unity, harmony, patience, love, brotherhood, peace, resilience, interconnectedness, and elevated consciousness;
  3. Increased self-awareness and self-realization, empowerment, positive thinking, personal responsibility, and intuitive guidance;
  4. The body-mind-spirit connection will resonate at a higher vibration than ever before in the history of the human race.

Some people see two paths emerging: the path of totalitarianism and enslavement by powerful elites; and the path of liberation and spiritual evolution by the masses.

In the meantime, while we wait for our astrological guides to enlighten us, we can work on these qualities as individuals and gain more control over our own lives and our own mental, physical, and spiritual development through mindfulness, yoga, spiritual practices like prayer and meditation, healthful nutrition, exercise, and kindness.

I never liked the song Age of Aquarius. But I love the song hair. I appreciated it more after my hair grew back a few months after I finished chemo. Times change. There are a lot of elets who want total power.

    • I do what I can, but I’m a realist. I have no illusions about human nature and our capacity to evolve to a higher level. It has to happen individually, just like Gandhi said. Have a wonderful day, Ned!

  4. I’m always hopeful that things will get better in the world. But I agree, it needs to start on an individual basis. But good things can spread from the “one” to the “many.” So, I hope more people start spreading a little more kindness. 😎

Guess I’m agnostic. I have an Aquarius coffee mug, belonging to my grandfather who was Aquarian. He was the glue holding our extended family together. But, as you say, that’s a highly individual basis.

When this song came to prominence, I lived in a part of New Mexico where music like this only aired for a few hours after 3:00 p.m. Now, that still gets associated by me with songs of that era and I find myself thinking of a hidden transistor radio listened to between classes during junior high school.

  9. Oh my, what a wonderful throwback and one of my favorite songs Dawn. Thanks for posting and asking a pertinent question we’ve been asking for decades. Songs of this era contained the types of messages and answers we still search for. Yet, as we know, change only happens with the man in the mirror. Each one, reach one and teach one. What a great compilation of reality checks! Thanks so much for sharing. 🤗💋🌺🥰🙏🏼🌞🦋💖☮

“But, whatever happened to the Age of Aquarius?” – that’s something I’ve been wondering about. Something certainly killed/put a kibosh on hope, dreams and aspirations. Its crazy but I think hippies gave hope to people. They had an innocence about them, and its like when they lost hope/got jobs, everyone else grew cynical.

I loved that Song so much. I think it touched people in a variety of ways, at the personal and as a collective. The song had a meditative and revolutionary effect upon one. The deeper you got into the music and the lyrics it began to work on the anatomy of the spirit and mind.
♡“Jupiter aligns with Mars several times a year, and the Moon is in the 7th House for 2 hours everyday.”♡
This is such a great observation, there is a timelessness in the message, it can begin at anytime.
Like with all songs of a universal nature that can bring so many people together in one moment in history, there will be critics that would destroy its message by categorizing and labelling it, particularly because it is composed in the language of astrology.
Thank you for sharing these notes with us.

  14. Believe it or not, I was a player (extra?) in the musical for a few weeks, long time ago. You reminded me of the good times again. I think they will never come back.

Sorry for my depressing final sentence. 😉

      • That’s great to hear from you again. Have thought of you from time to time, and asked myself how you feel. I also thought of California, and how I would like to be their, although I have never been there. I see that you are back in your old form, I hope so, which is enough for me to explain your state of mind.
Now my contributions or articles are getting back into the swing of things. I have not read your post yet, or have you not written one? I just wanted to answer quickly. Later I look, better tomorrow. Here it is now 4 o’clock at night.
You are back, the sun is coming up, and everything is clear. Ciao

        Good opportunity:
Oh so, what I’ve always wanted to ask you, is that your hair in the picture or what is that on your head? I like the picture. It’s kind of strange, isn’t it?

      • That’s not me in the photo! Just a picture from the Internet. California has some nice places, but it is crowded, polluted, and too expensive. People are moving out of there.

      • Ooohh. And now?

California is one of the places Germans long for. It is said (here) to be “the think tank” of the world.

      • The “think tank” of the world? I find that very comical. CA is regressive, if anything at all, for all of its progressive talk. I have to question who is controlling the media in Germany. It sounds like the German people are subjected to a lot of propaganda that is not based on reality.

      • Media in Germany
We have two types of media. First, there are the “public television stations (ÖR), and the private stations. The list of German-language television stations includes fee-financed public and advertising-financed private full-service and special-interest programs, as well as pay TV.

        Public right channels:
        First German Television (ARD)
        Second German Television (ZDF)
Regional television stations (Bavaria, Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk, etc.,)

        Private channels
        RTL, SAT, VOX etc.

Then there is another station, which is called “Arte”. This is a joint production of Switzerland, France and Germany. This one is more aimed at the intellectuals, so it broadcasts “intellectual crap”, related to political reporting. When it comes to documentaries, films, etc., it’s quite good.

Then we have “Die Deutsche Welle.” This is the German propaganda station for foreign countries. The broadcasts are in English and in almost all other languages. The mission of “Deutsche Welle” is to attract people to come to Germany, and in Europe to incite the citizens against Russia. An American journalist, Melinda Crane, works there as a journalist, and according to my latest information, she is also a department head or editorial director. She is a Democrat and supports the Clinton clan. Deutsche Welle broadcasts in all languages, almost all.

I also get CNN and BBC.

Now comes the most important thing.

The private ones live from the advertising incomes, the ÖR however, are “zwangsfinanziert”. Every household is forced to pay €18.50 per month, even if they don’t have a TV. To own a radio is enough to have to pay the monthly compulsory fees. Large companies that have many televisions, radios, monitors in use, also pay only 18.50 €.

Who does not pay, and these are very few, is indicated and gets a criminal procedure. There are citizen initiatives against this form of fraud, but they have no success. Some are even behind prison bars.

Last year, the revenues of the ÖR amounted to 8.1 billion. This is an incredibly high sum. Newscasters and other employees are not infrequently multiple millionaires.

        Control of the broadcasters
There is the so-called “supervisory board” that sets the direction of the broadcasters. All sorts of figures sit on this supervisory board, including politicians. State and federal ministers, the church, in other words, all kinds of lobbyists.

Talk shows are usually produced by the presenters themselves. They have their own private company, so to speak, within the public broadcaster. But only a few viewers know that. Most believe the talk shows are produced by the public broadcasters (ÖR), which is not the case, but they are paid for by the ÖR.

        Summary
The ÖR stations are good stations insofar as they do not report on politics. Thus, they have uncovered a plethora of scandals.

The private broadcasters stay out of politics as much as possible, although it has to be noted, due to Corona and Ukraine, that they also report more about politics than before. But the orientation is the same as that of the ÖR. They complement each other.

At any time, you can watch a good movie or even good documentaries.

According to evaluated research, 98% of media professionals are oriented to the left.

      • The liberal media is widespread in the U.S., but Fox, which is more middle-of-the road, is #1. They also feature some conservative pundits like Sean Hannity. CNN has been caught lying many times, suppresses a lot of news, and has lost lawsuits. I stopped watching it in 2013. My husband and I are very selective about what we watch because there is too much political propaganda and manipulation going on.

      • I also watch the leftist propaganda channels because I want to know how they argue. It’s always good to know what the opponent thinks.

  16. Hair is my favorite musical. I’ve been to his movie maybe ten times. I always use the song Aquarious, and the lyrics ‘let the sun shine in’. After a long time, I listened to the song with pleasure, thank you for your work. Greetings and love…

  17. Love the song, movie and idea. If only. None of the criteria applies to this time. Maybe it’s in the future, a special alignment we can’t even imagine, when people live in harmony and are no longer slaughtering each other. I love the idea of that AGE, even if it’s just one more dream. Great post.
