Dance Your Blues Away
by Dawn Pisturino
Most of us remember the romance of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers gliding “cheek to cheek” across the stage; the high intensity of John Travolta in his white disco suit gyrating under the strobe lights; and the graceful pirouettes of the Sugar Plum Fairy in The Nutcracker ballet.
Dancing has always been popular entertainment in the United States. And since the 1940s, it has been used therapeutically, as well.
Dance movement therapy is a recognized form of psychotherapy which uses movement to encourage free expression in people with emotional, mental, behavioral, and physical problems.
Recognizing that the mind and body work together, dance therapists use the rhythmic movements in dance to promote relaxation, wellness, and social interaction.
Dance therapy is often used to help victims of rape and sexual abuse to express the trauma of their experiences. People with physical disabilities improve their balance, coordination, and self-esteem through movement exercises. Chronically ill and terminally ill people find temporary distraction from their pain, fear, and anxiety. Even children and senior citizens benefit from the unrestricted movements.
Dance is a form of creative expression which integrates body, mind, and spirit. In Asia, it developed largely as a form of sacred expression. The Hindu god Shiva, in the form of Nataraja — the Cosmic Dancer — is shown in ancient statues and engravings dancing the rhythm of the universe and its ever-revolving cycles of birth and death, creation and destruction. In quantum physics, he beautifully symbolizes the ever-changing energy of the universe in its many forms.
Dancing is a great form of aerobic exercise which anybody can do. Just put on some music, and let yourself go! It strengthens the muscles and improves flexibility and coordination. It reduces muscle tension and stress, increases circulation, and opens up the lungs. But most of all, it’s just plain fun!
“Dance till the stars come down from the rafters,
Dance, dance, dance till you drop.”
W.H. Auden

There are few things more positive than dancing, even watching dance lifts the soul, and Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers were definitely the best!

No, I do not think watching a dance performed by other is a better experience than dancing itself. Becoming a watcher of dancing body during the dance can only be better than dancing.
Dance is ultimate experience provided the dancer get lost in the dance and only the dance remains. Indian God Nataraja is symbolic representation of how God is invisible in this world but if this world can be treated as cosmic dance of the dancing god Nataraja then we including everything around us too are part of his dance and the dancer is able to present itself through us only! If we do not exist then God too ceases to exist! This is what Meister Eckhart says after attaining salvation : “Oh God, if there existed no one like me on this planet then you too cease to exist, so we need you but you too need people like us to remain alive on this planet. So thank us that we are able to discover you.”
These are not exact words but I took this meaning from what he said.

Blessed are you. Practicing awareness meditation during dancing may be of some help to be able to fall to your centre of being during dancing and get ultimate or ecstatic or sacred experience too. My blog posts for more info about it. http://philosia.in/2021/05/05/how-meditation-actually-helps-us/

Entertainment, therapy, beauty, creativity, exercise…dance!!! Thanks for sharing this fun and informative post, dear Dawn. Indeed, the names of Fred & Ginger come to mind for many, though I also think of Michele Lee Sefton. Wonderful video, too 😎

Yes, I was also thinking of Michele when I posted this! She exemplifies that dancing sprite that we all admire and cherish.

Interesting character Vera Ellen, nice write up on IMDB. They said big time stardom eluded her, which is interesting as for example she struck me as the better dancer than Debbie Reynolds. They had an ominous bit from her trivia page: “but dark, outside influences steered her away altogether. Personal unhappiness and ill health would quickly take their toll on her.” Said she had an eating disorder that contributed to her poor health.

Yes, she looks anorexic, so I believe that story! But what a dancer!

Girl dancing is a daily thing for me. While I am on the computer, I take my periodic pauses, get out of my chair, flip on some music and dance my tush off. I’ve always loved to dance, but never realized how therapeutic it was and still is. Great post Dawn! 💃🏻🎶💃🏼
