AI Generated Art

on March 8, 2023

Just for fun, I tried out the new AI image generator on Gab by typing in the words, “I want an image of a desert landscape at sunrise.” After a few seconds, it produced the two images above. Next, I went over to Fotor, inputted the same words, and got the two images below.

I like the colors in all four images, but of course, the images look similar and digitally created. The question is: Do they look like they were artificially created by a non-human? Do they look like they were digitally created by a human? Or is there no difference at all? Does it even matter? Is it really art?

What do you think?

  1. I have used this format myself with Dalle. I do not believe they are created by a human, except humans invented/created the digital system. It only take a matter of seconds for the images to be produced, a human would not be able to generate the images that quickly. I am an oil painter (mostly landscapes) and recently I have used the AI for ideas for paintings (on canvas). I gave the system a description of a creek behind my house where I grew up and included the location. I specifically asked for a view of the creek from the east facing west at sunset. The images it gave me were not EXACT, however, surprisingly very close. It even made me think, “wow” that really looks like the creek. I did a painting with some variations from one of the images. I thought about who’s creation of the painting is this? However, you don’t get that image without the description (a specific one) that you insert. And in my case, I am the one that also put the paint on canvas. Your desert images were produced from your description. Therefore, your creation……..the AI is a tool. I only use it when I am stuck on what I want to put on canvas, when I have trouble visualizing it. I know what I want, just not seeing it. AI really helps in those brain blockage times. 🙂

We are all getting into it. Cool results. It’s interesting to see what the AI comes up with.

  3. Dawn, I must say, as an artist, that AI generated images are not art. Art can only be created by a human being and through work, hard work. These programmes are stealing art from artists from all over the world whose images appear and are found on the internet. I, along with most other artists stand completely opposed and against AI if it is to be used by artists or designers as a means to create art. I will support AI if it is thought of as another tool to further enhance or to develop an idea that must be worked on with the hands and mind of an artist, either through digital means or mechanical. AI should be considered as a tool, like a ruler. Sorry Dawn, but I have a strong opinion against AI if it is to be used as a way to “create” works of art and for me, like for many other artists, there is no such thing as “AI Art”. Thank you for bringing this topic up for discussion as I am sure it will cause polemics but it is important to say it all and debate it all, in a civilised and charitable way.
    All the best.

    • Francisco, even if a person enters the description, the art is being created by a robot and not a human being, so I agree with you. AI may be a tool and a fun toy, but it is not genuine art as we know it. People who use it should at least be honest and inform the viewer that they have used AI to create the image. I will always support the creative efforts of real humans – and not robots.

      • I know Dawn, because you are an artist and you understand that art is a process that begins in the mind, the human mind, not a computer programme. As it is there are hundreds of artists all around the world that are suing such AI sites for stealing their creative/artistic property online to create this so-called “AI art.” I hope they win. All the best!

      • Yes, we must give them our support. I’ve never wanted to live in a “Star Trek” world of robots, high technology, and empty space. But – it makes me appreciate my fellow humans more!

It’s fun to play around with, but AI still has a long way to go before it produces good art and poetry!

Dawn, interesting examples. I suppose like any tool it has its place. The colors are enhanced and stand out. It reminds my of kids coloring within the lines. Fun to look at but doesn’t call my spirit. But, i have to acknowledge not all art by humans calls me. I am much more concerned about AI taking over writing! Scary!

  7. WOW Dawn, look at you! I love vivid colors. 🌄🌆🗻 What an interesting result with this software. I applaud you for trying something new and for using it as a learning tool for understanding how the application of AI can catapult the imagination to creating something beyond your wildest imagination! Thanks so much for sharing this with us and for introducing me to a different Image Generator I never heard of! 👏🏼💐💖🥰👏🏼

  8. I think that art can only truly be created by a human. Art is a reflection of emotions and feelings, a very human thing. I don’t deny that AI can create a pleasant image or verse, but it will never generate the feelings that “human art” does.

  9. I think it is interesting that both look like deserts, but at the same time look like two different deserts. It seems like you can even more specific. I also like that this is right on the border of “is it art, or not?”

Visually: If you and I could get the same exact result by entering the same or similar words, probably not.

What if a wordsmith entered a beautiful poem? Maybe?

I like your experiment and I look forward to see what other people think!

  12. These are lovely. Some artists have even begun incorporating AI powered generators into their workflow. Like for example, AI can be used to create patterns for clothes, or even panoramic backgrounds for their paintings. 🙂 The biggest downside is that you can’t put a copyright on them. Hehe.

    Good day Dawn

As of AI, all I see there is theft of intellectual property in the guise of nourishing said AI from pictures of real artist to teach them how to mimic.

The only thing I fear, is that it will even more divide artist between them instead of collaboration.

Thank you for raising that sensible question. And I wish you the most superb day. Do take care 💌💌💌

I for my humble part try to stay far of anything that AI do make.

  16. I think it looks cool. However, I think I would tire quickly of AI generated art. Knowing it is AI generated takes something away.

AI is going to take away a lot of our jobs and projects in the coming years, but not all of it. I was working with AI algorithms myself, using them for mail sorting machines, and it enables us to replace almost all human mail sorters with machines. However, there are things that are very difficult to do with AI. AI is still far from being truly intelligent and creative in an truly autonomous sense. Something is lacking that is still far off.

Because my mind would not first go to AI generated art, I think they look digitally created by humans, to answer your question. 😁 I think AI generated art, in all the forms this is appearing, is interesting, but I am concerned about the far-reaching implications.

Interesting experiment and interesting artwork! I get strong digitally created vibes from the artwork and am not sure I really love it, as it feels like something a beginner digital artist might create. It also has rather an eerie feel to it, so I love what people are saying in the comments about how true art needs a soul.

Our mind is beyond the creativity, imagination ,the real artistic work can never be surpassed by AI but still for those who are not capable of drawing due to different ability can use AI for showing their creativity and true imagination ,i have seen how handicaped people able to express themselves with the help of AI ,well everything is amazing either create it by hand or AI both is your creativity, stay blessed.

  29. I worry about a world where humans beings no longer feel they serve a purpose from all this AI. As for the AI generated art, I’m not very impressed. Mostly because the art feels empty with no soul.

Yes it is AI generated art, we programmers steal and give your beautiful arts as input data to them, so it’s a mixed collection of man-made arts, But No-one can win a real artist 🙂
