I’m writing this post today in response to Michele Lee’s “What Moves You” blog challenge:
http://www.myinspiredlife.org/2023/04/29/what-moves-you-blog-challenge/
The rain we received last summer and winter washed away some of our driveway. We have a circular drive, and both ends of the drive were getting trickier to pull in and out. My husband ordered 10 yards of dirt, and I volunteered to do the work. I figured this would be a great way to work out muscles I haven’t used for a while. I walk a lot and use the elliptical, but manual labor, like digging trenches, laying drainage pipes, moving cinder blocks, and transferring dirt, is not something I usually do. Luckily, the weather has been cooler, making it the ideal time to do it. Let me tell you, it’s been back-breaking work, and I have slept like a baby every night since starting this project, even if I only work on it for an hour. The dog, of course, finds a comfortable spot and watches me intently — and he’s the one who gets all the treats afterward!
Dirt flies in my face,
Muscles stretch and cry with pain,
But progress is made.
~
As of this date, I’ve already moved half the dirt and completed one driveway entrance.
Happy Digging!
~

Congratulations on your progress. Isnβt it fun to just work with your body for a while and put your brain on hold?

Yes, it is. I live in my brain too much, and it’s a relief to just work and not think. Thanks, Russ!

It is nice of you to offer to do the work and you should sleep for as long as your body wants cause you did the work. I love this!

Did she learn this during her years on Knot’s Landing? (I’m kidding. I know that’s a different Michelle lee.)

Nice work! My muscles are aching just reading this, ha. It sounds like a ton of work, but how incredible will it feel when you finish the project and get to see what youβve accomplished? Rooting for you! ππΌ

Thank you so much! I’ve lost weight, I feel more physically fit, I’m sleeping well, and I can really appreciate the men and women who do hands-on work for a living.

Oh my, Dawn. Youβre amazing for doing this. I wish I could but I have a back that keeps me from doing too strenuous work. Even weeding sometimes tires me out. I applaud you my friend. Take care please. I loved your share. Blessings. Xoxo

Thank you, Selma, I have a bad back, too, and I was worried about injuring myself. So far, strengthening my abdominal and back muscles has helped me, but I don’t work any longer than an hour or hour and a half. I have a heart condition, too, but the work has lowered my pulse rate. I don ‘t want to work myself into a heart attack. though. Moderation is the key. Have a great day!

Wow! Sounds like hard and satisfying work. A few years ago I slowly dismantled a wooden gazebo that was rotting in our backyard and chopped the wood into small enough pieces to haul to the dump in my van. It was some the hardest work I ever did and I cried many times (even broke a window when a large piece swung down and got away from me). Nothing beat the feeling of completing that task though! We can learn a lot about ourselves from hard physical work.
