Two Lonely People

by Dawn Pisturino

Two lonely people

Who found each other

And tried, with fumbling fingers,

To unlock the secrets

Of each other’s hearts. . .

Yesterday, I went to lunch with a group of nurses and nursing assistants that I worked with at the local hospital. I thought going would dredge up bad memories, but it turned out to be a lot of fun. Our favorite topic of conversation? All the mean, nasty doctors who abused and humiliated us. That’s been a real problem in the healthcare profession — verbal abuse and sexual harassment. (We had a lady doctor who ripped the soap dispensers off the walls and threw telephones across the room whenever she got angry. And she did this in front of patients, which really disgusted me.) Doctors were seen as god-like figures who held the power of life and death in their hands. Even if they killed someone, it was nearly impossible to get them fired from a hospital because of the “good old boys club.” Hospitals would just lawyer up and pay off the plaintiffs with big payouts. That’s changing. Hospitals no longer tolerate sexual harassment and bad behavior from doctors. They can’t afford to keep incompetent doctors who injure and kill patients. And most hospitals suffered financially during the COVID pandemic. They can’t afford to be embroiled in huge lawsuits.

Please have a healthy and wonderful day! And, if you’re not happy with your doctor, it’s okay to find another one. It’s okay to complain to the State Medical Board.

  3. Hi Dawn, I was interested to read your comments about doctors. I’ve experienced a few poor ones that have misdiagnosed, but, on the whole the doctors who have cared for my two sons have been wonderful. Both suffered chronic illnesses and they’ve had over 40 operations between them.

    • Yes, there are some really good doctors out there, and I’m sorry if I implied that there aren’t any good ones. I’m glad you had a positive experience. When you work inside healthcare, you see things others don’t see, and we can’t talk about it due to HIPAA laws. My husband had a wonderful surgeon for both of his knee replacement surgeries. And I specially chose the surgeon for my hysterectomy because I had worked with him and knew he would do a great job. Cheers!

      • There are always a mixture of people in every job and profession. I am a chartered accountant and there are goods ones and the rest 😉. Funnily enough, I spent all day in the ER today as my aunt collapsed. She has a kidney infection and stones. She’s 89 so it was quite stressful 🙏💛

  8. A very sad commentary on doctors. I’ve seen and believe this to be true. Of course, like every profession, there also are those who are dedicated and take their profession seriously and professionally.
