Yesterday, I went to lunch with a group of nurses and nursing assistants that I worked with at the local hospital. I thought going would dredge up bad memories, but it turned out to be a lot of fun. Our favorite topic of conversation? All the mean, nasty doctors who abused and humiliated us. That’s been a real problem in the healthcare profession — verbal abuse and sexual harassment. (We had a lady doctor who ripped the soap dispensers off the walls and threw telephones across the room whenever she got angry. And she did this in front of patients, which really disgusted me.) Doctors were seen as god-like figures who held the power of life and death in their hands. Even if they killed someone, it was nearly impossible to get them fired from a hospital because of the “good old boys club.” Hospitals would just lawyer up and pay off the plaintiffs with big payouts. That’s changing. Hospitals no longer tolerate sexual harassment and bad behavior from doctors. They can’t afford to keep incompetent doctors who injure and kill patients. And most hospitals suffered financially during the COVID pandemic. They can’t afford to be embroiled in huge lawsuits.
Please have a healthy and wonderful day! And, if you’re not happy with your doctor, it’s okay to find another one. It’s okay to complain to the State Medical Board.
